It is good to see more and more Forex robot creators publishing live results rather than a set of back tests or screen shots. It was FapTurbo at the end of last year who broke new ground with their live results published directly on their sales page. In fact much of Fap Turbo‘s claim to fame was that they were the first robot publishers to do so. Raising the bar for all Forex robots.

While it is great to have forex EA creators publish their own live results it still not so easy to compare one set of results to another. Which is why I am returning to my project to compare all the top forex robots in both live and back tests. This is going to be a major project and for this purpose I will be setting up a dedicated website at LiveMT4.com

2010 looks likely to be a roller-coaster year for the currency markets with plenty of FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt) to fuel big currency movements. This is going to suit some trading methods better than others.

While many Forex robots can and do trade profitably most of the time. Automated trading is not for everyone. When real money is on the line, many people prefer to pull the trigger themselves but you have to know what you are doing.

Correlation Trading

My personal pick for best trading system for the year ahead would be Jason Fielder‘s Correlation Code. Why? When the big swings occur, and they will, this is the best set of proprietary tools and methods I’ve seen for analyzing and trading on breaks in currency correlations. Knowing when and in which direction to trade and when not to trade is the difference between making good gains or wiping out your account.

I was just reading through the Gomega GBPJPY FAQ PDF file which you can download from the sales page. And the following caught my attention.

“If I’m a past client, do I get a discount?“

“If you’re a past FXPP AutoTrader or Gomega AutoTrader client, then you will receive the new Gomega at no additional cost.
If you are a client from any of our other products, you qualify for a discount. Contact us for more details on that at ….”

So my question is, would this policy apply when the new version of Xray becomes available? By that I mean, if you are already a Gomega client at the time that the new version of Xray is released, would you have access to it and at a discount? (Remember of course it may not be released to the general public, but I’m sure it would be available to all new clients.)

While I can’t answer that question myself, it certainly is something to consider and something to ask the Gomega sales about before the doors close on Gomega GBPJPY.

Although Gomega Xray began with a few days lead over Conqueror and MegaDroid, it has outperformed the other EAs by a very large margin.

The results for GridBot were provided by my colleague, as so far my installation of Grdibot has not yet opened any trades. This may be due to some incompatibility issue with the FXDD version of MT4 and the workings of GridBot.

Forex Gridbot has been trading for less than 2 weeks and Gomega GBPJPY less than 1 week, so there is not a lot that can be read into these results so far. What is interesting here is that both Gridbot and Gomega GBPJPY trade on the Pound Yen (Gridbot also trades the USD JPY). A year ago I was the biggest skeptic of Forex trading and especially automated trading systems. I had to change my tune however when a friend of mine quit his day job after a year of manual trading. He is one of the 5% who can make money trading Forex manually. Gomega Xray was also trading this currency pair and had been in the trade since the week before. And just now Gomega Xray exited its position in the GBPJPY at a profit of $704.52. Leaving it with an account balance of $7686.72 and an equity balance of $8850.

So how did Gomega GBPJPY perform in the back test? I ran the test across the same time period that we have live results for. Which is from October 5th 2008 through to April 10 2009. Starting with an account size of $5000, the Gomega GBPJPY back test finished with a closing balance of $8174 or a gain of 63%. This compares well to the live results from Gomega clients. Andreas Maeder’s account began live trading on September 2nd 2008 with a starting balance $10,000. And by April 6, 2009, the balance stood at $19,909.24. A gain of 99% for the 7 months. You can see Andreas, from Switzerland, talk about his experience trading with Gomega and the settings he is using. Sean Hummel ran a $5000 demo account over the same period which reached at closing balance of $14,608.67 by April 3rd, that’s a gain of 192%. And Greg Surowiec traded a live money account starting in October 5th, 2005 with $5000, by April 10th it had reached $12,811.01 or a gain of 156%.

Here I’ve taken the back test result chart and superimposed it over the live result charts (Sean, Greg). I’ve color coded the balance curves to make it easier to compare the results. The blue line is the live money account, the green line is the forward demo test and the orange is the back test results.

Just thought I’d make a quick video to show Gomega Xray in action. Gomega Xray closed the week with a balance of $6980.77, which is slightly off its high of last week. However just looking at balance is somewhat misleading, as there are many trades that were still open at the close of trading for the week. I believe the more relevant number to look at, is the equity balance, which currently stands at $8059.24. After all, if I were to have manually closed out all the trades then this would be the approximate account balance.

It is unfortunate that the Metatrader platform isn’t able to include the equity balance in it’s detailed report. This, along with the account balance, would give a much better representation of the trading performance.

To illustrate my point I’ve decided to plot onto the chart produced by Metatrader, the equity balance at the end of each week. Each red dot represents the current equity balance at the end of each week. The green line is simply to illustrate an approximate equity balance curve. Of course the only equity balance data I have, is from the detailed reports Metatrader has generated and I’ve only been generating those once per week. It would be nice if there were a plugin for Metatrader that could log the equity balance and produce a nice graph with the click of a button.

You will notice that the red dots are not evenly spaced, this is because Metatrader plots the horizontal axis on a per trade closed scale, not on a unified time scale. So the distance between the 5th and 6th red dot from the left, is just one week. That is the week before last week, which was a very active week for Gomega Xray. It was during that week, that the massive disparity between the account balance and the equity balance became glaringly obvious. While the account balance was in decline for much of the week, the equity balance was flux but generally rising. Which would suggest the equity balance is a fairly good indicator of the future account position. This also makes sense as the equity balance includes the current open trades, many of which are likely to be closing in on their profit targets.

Of course having Gomega Xray trading right in front of you, its easy to see this phenomenon in action. Which is what initially motivated me to make the above video.

Although the chart is very detailed and looks rather intimidating, all the complexity of analyzing the various signals, is handled automatically by Gomega GBPJPY. However at the same time, through the indicators on the chart, you have a window on the advanced analysis that is going on in the background. You get the feeling you are looking under the hood of a high performance sports car.

Gomega GPJPY trades the Pound Yen currency pair on the 4 hour time frame. It trades during an eight hour entry window that covers the second part of the Asian trading session and the first part of the London session.

Installation was a breeze, it couldn’t be easier. Simply run the installer, enter your license details and you’re away.

Again I’ve installed this on the Metatrader4 platform I downloaded from  Forex broker, FXDD. However you could run this with any up to date Metatrader4 and any broker of your choice.

The only parameters you need to setup are:
Profit Target: I left this at the default setting of 500 PIPs for my initial forward testing.
Percent of Equity to Risk: I’ve left this at the default setting of 1%.
Modify Initial Stop Loss: Again I left this at the default setting of “True”. This will allow Gomega GPJPY to intelligently modify the stop loss throughout the trades, so it can lock in profits.

All systems are go, and just waiting for the second half of the Asian session to begin and Gomega GPJPY will spring into action. I’ll be posting regular updates. Stay tuned.

Part of the reason for the string of losses in my opinion is Gomega Xray trades multiple currency pairs and one of the entry criteria is the cross currencies for each currency pair being traded. This is one of the factors that gives Gomega an edge when determining whether to enter a trade. However it is a two edged sword, if the market direction changes and goes against Gomega, Gomega will likely have several small losses in a row as the stop losses are triggered across several currencies. Of course the opposite is true when Gomega is on the right side of a market movement, the result being multiple big wins in a row.

This is exactly how last weeks trading had been. Gomega found itself on the wrong side of the market movement a couple of times as well as some positions being spiked out by major news events. Those news events no doubt had sent a cascade of stop losses rippling across the markets. Perhaps a great oppurtunity for a dedicated manual trader? However in spite of this, Gomega was still in the trade on several positions since the beginning of the week and earlier. And as the Euro continued to strengthen throughout the week, Gomega’s equity position continued to grow, even though its balance was down.

By the end of the week, Gomega had closed out several positions it had been holding and ended the week with a balance of $7296 and equity of $7478. That’s a gain of $2296 or 45% in less than 1 month.

While the week’s trading didn’t produce a nice smooth balance curve, the end result is still very impressive. If Metatrader were able to show an equity curve that included the equity balance, it would be easier to visualize how the trading situation had progressed.

The Four Year Retirement Plan

While it is not possible to buy Gomega Xray at this time, there is another very exciting offering from Quantum Research. This has prompted me into extending my testing. Currently Gomega is running on a demo account at Alpari. However Quantum Research recommend FXDD as the broker where Gomega performs best. As Gomega has been performing so well, I have been considering testing Gomega both with and without a trailing stop. So I’ve decided to setup 2 new demo accounts with FXDD. These again will be configured with the default settings. And I’ll start publishing the first results this weekend.

Just lately a number of low power computers became available based on the new Intel Atom CPU. Whilst PC hardware fans may tell you that these little PCs aren’t sufficient to do any heavy work, I am certain that anything that offers better performance than the 1st generation Centrino platform, merits another look.

The Asus EeeBox appeared a sensible choice to try out this concept and I decided to purchase the EeeBox B202 which consumes less than thirty watts at maximum power. Under the hood is the Intel Atom N270, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB drive. My system came with Windows XP and was just about ready to run Metatrader right from the box.

The other nice feature of this tiny Computer is that it can be attached to the back of an LCD screen using the VESA mounting ( ever marvelled what those screw holes in the back of your LCD screen were for? ). You can drive up to two screens, with a maximum resolution of 2048 by 1536 each. That should be adequate for most of us. I am using it with a single screen at 1680 by 1050. It may be used with the new HD screens which have a resolution of 1920 by 1080.

Up and Running with Gomega Xray

So would the Metatrader four platform and Gomega Xray be too much for this little energy efficient Computer? I installed Gomega Xray and setup the 6 currency pairs as explained in the Quantum manual. Then checked the CPU load whilst the system was actively trading on a demo account. The maximum load as according to the windows task manager  was 5% and the average around 2%. So this is unquestionably a practicable system to trade twenty-four hours a day with, on autopilot.

Simply to try and stress the system a little, I attempted burning a DVD whilst watching a video file, all with Gomega trading in the background. The system was running nicely at 25% CPU use. Whilst I don’t suggest using your system to do anything other than running your EA, it is good to know there’s processing power to spare with this system. As a side note, quickly moving the mouse around causes CPU use to spike up to 38%. Obviously Microsoft have done litle to optimize their code for such a basic and fundamental task.

The installation instructions for Gomega Xray are exhaustive and simple to follow, prepared in a step by step format. There are also setup videos that walk you thru the original setup and configuration of Gomega, including the recommended settings. This must be one of the simplest install and setup. Whilst there’s a some new language to cope with like Market Pulse, X Spread and Randomness indicators, these too are entirely explained in the Under the Hood video, which is a component of the setup guide.

Even though it is common to get stuck in and start back testing Expert Advisors first and then forward test. I have opted to let it run on a new demo account and observe it in action. I downloaded Metatrader direct from Metaquotes.net and setup a $5000 demo account with Alpari. I then setup Gomega Xray according to the installation instructions. This was about twelve hours ago and Xray has so far opened four trades on different currency pairs and is currently showing an unrealized $148 profit. These trades are all still open so a lot could occur before Gomega closes the trades at the either the profit target or the stop loss setting. However it is really a great start and I am looking forward to checking the situation in the morning.
